Chicken salad is the #1 thing I don’t order at restaurants.

And I think this makes perfect sense.

I mean, first of all, who wants chicken salad when you can get a tomato mozzarella panini or a sandwich with basil pesto or heck, a juicy burger made from locally sourced meat?

But second, and even more importantly, chicken salad is what you call a risky food. Trust me: bad chicken salad is bad. Like, rip-your-mouth-out bad. B-A-D bad. Three years ago, the last time I ordered it in a restaurant that I remember, I was up the whole night afterward, sick. Violently sick. And the next day, when I called the manager of said dining establishment to let him know, he didn’t believe me.

You know what it’s like when you start noticing what you appreciate about something, be it food or a place or a person you’ve just met, and then it goes and gets better? Almost as if your thankfulness were the cause, that thing suddenly pulls out even more of its charms: that dark chocolate’s topped by sea salt, that person makes you laugh especially hard, that neighborhood looks much more lovely when the sunlight hits the trees a certain way. You already knew you liked it, but now. Oh, now! Now you’re sold, smitten, goooone.

Well, that’s what summer’s gone and done, since I wrote that last post.

And has it ever.

There are two things on my mind this morning, seemingly unrelated, and I am sorry to say that while they will involve food, they won’t come with a new recipe, just one that’s been posted here before. You could say they’re two culminations, the kind that build for months and months, the kind that reached fruition this week, like recipes that rumble around in your head until you make them or tastes that stay with you until one day, you’re at a party and someone hands you a cracker with an interesting spread, and you say, aha! this is what I been wanting! That’s what they’re like.
