If, under some sort of food tyranny, I were forced to choose only one of the three meals in a day, ever after to eat solely breakfast, lunch or dinner, I wouldn’t flinch: breakfast.
Don’t get me wrong: a great pizza pie or an amazing cookie are practically food groups unto themselves, and I’d miss them. But, when push comes to shove, you just can’t beat the first meal, the one that boasts pastries and eggs and fruits and granola. Belgian waffles and blueberry pancakes and sticky buns and French toast. Breakfast can be delightfully carb-heavy, have you noticed? Maybe that’s why I like it so much. And, health-wise, if you’re going to eat a lot of carbs, it’s best to do it early, so your body has the whole day to burn it off. At least, these are the arguments I make when faced with a good chocolate croissant or a fresh brioche.
Given that I have such a soft spot for breakfast, you could probably guess I love weekend brunches. And, therefore, I’ve now tried so many breakfast places, I couldn’t even name them all. There are several great spots I frequent, but one remains my all-time, stand-out favorite. It’s called Egg Harbor Cafe, and there are 14 total locations, all in the Chicago suburbs.
The decor is country, a cozy mix of rooster- and chicken-related knick-knacks, with simple booths and tables. The service is always good (and I’ve been there hundreds of times), and the food—well, the food is consistently outstanding.
My entree of choice is the {Season} in Italy French Toast, which changes quarterly. The summer version, pictured in this post, highlights stacked layers of French toast, made of white bread and linked through strawberry-flavored cheese. The toppings are blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and granola, with a raspberry sauce tying everything together. Breakfast perfection–as delectable as it is filling and, affordable!, at just $8.95.
If you’re in the area, run, don’t walk, to this fantastic restaurant. They also serve lunch, which, though not as appealing to me, obviously, is just as good. In fact, just thinking about the cream of chicken soup is making my mouth water.
